Dehradun: Waste Warriors celebrated their 10-year anniversary on 17th of November 2022 at the Madhuban Hotel, Dehradun. Waste Warriors was formed in September 2012, with the mission of fighting the war against waste in India.
An event was held to commemorate and mark the monumental occasion, showcasing the NGO’s journey and announcing their strategic approach and road map for the future. A new website was launched, and community members and stakeholders were felicitated for their valuable contributions.
Vishal Kumar, CEO, Waste Warriors said “We would like to extend our well wishes and gratitude to everyone that has been a part of our journey. It has very much been a team effort and we are touched by the level of support that we have received.”
Waste Warriors currently employs 160 people at 9 locations across Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. 6000 plus Tons of waste processed till date. Through different strategic and creative interventions, Waste Warriors has established itself as one of the leaders in community-led Solid Waste Management in the Himalayas. They are working to ensure that systems are in place, where every citizen disposes of their waste correctly and feels a sense of civic responsibility and national pride regarding cleanliness.
The co-founder of Waste Warriors, Jodie Underhill, known as ‘Garbage Girl’, was one of the speakers at the event. Jodie said “I could not feel prouder right now. It has been a wonderful journey and it’s so exciting to see how far we have progressed. Thank you for believing in us”
Waste Warriors strives to drive change and make a difference by collaborating with individuals, communities, children, and businesses, walking hand in hand with Safai Saathis, Green Workers, SHG’s and Waste Pickers. Waste Warriors has also been instrumental in reducing the social stigma attached to waste.
Approximately 150 people attended the event. Guests of honour included, Mr. Sunil Uniyal Gama (Mayor, Dehradun), Mr. Harish Chandra Semwal (Additional Secretary, Department of Irrigation for Uttarakhand, Panchayati Raj (Former Director and Secretary of Uttarakhand), Ms. Caroline Rowett (Deputy High Commissioner, British High Commission).
Mr. Bob Varma, husband of the late Mrs Shanti Varma, ex Principal of Welham Girls School and Founding Member/President of Waste Warriors accepted an award in her honour.
