16 May 2022, Dehradun! 6th UN Global Road Safety week 13-17 May 2022 was organised by Sanjay Orthopaedic, Spine & Maternity Centre, SHEWA Society in Gurukul Kangri University, Haridwar, Uttarakhand. Lecture was attended by Vice chancellor Dr. Roop Kishor Shastri, Dr. Sunil Kumar Registrar, Prof Devendra Singh Malik, Dr. Nitin Kamboj, Dr. Vinod Kumar, Dr. Nitin Bhardwaj and other staff, in addition to 300 students of various streams.
The theme of this year road safety is “streets for life, # Love 30”. The speed should be limited to 30 km per hour in urban area. As we know higher the speed, steeper the risk greater the fatalities.During his lecture Padma Shri recipient orthopaedic surgeon Dr. B. K. S. Sanjay said that road traffic accident have become an epidemic which is worse than Covid 19 pandemic. The aggressive behaviour of the drivers is the common scenario on our road. The driver feels proud to break the traffic rules. Dr. Sanjay told the accident which occur in the night are usually fatal.
The accident occurred in Champawat, Tota Ghati and Chakrata in Uttarakhand, teenagers’ death in Assam and medical student death in Maharashtra are the proofs. India and International Book Record Holders Orthopaedic Surgeon Dr. Gaurav Sanjay told that nearly 5 lakh accident are occurring in India every year. Out of them one fourth to one third are been killed and remaining one fourth of them are becoming disabled for rest of the life in spite of the best available treatment in current scenario of the country.
The victims are becoming poorer after these accidents according to Dr Gaurav Sanjay and nation is losing almost 3 to 5 percent of GDP due to accident according to Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Mr. Nitin Gadkari. Dr. Gaurav told that, it is impossible to identify virus with the naked eye but we can identify, catch and penalize the negligent drivers. It is found in our clinical study that 90 percent of the accident occur due to negligence of the drivers. It is suggested such negligent drivers should be identified, caught and penalized and such people should be given some other job rather than driving so that this menace can be controlled.
The lives of the passenger depends upon the drivers. After the awareness lecture, the students and faculty have taken the pledge to follow the traffic rules.In this series, respectively, road safety awareness lectures have been fixed in other institutions.
