Delhi: Congress general secretary of communications, Jairam Ramesh, has tweeted the news of the death of Sonia Gandhi’s mother. Rahul and Priyanka have visited their grandmother a number of times over the past few years. In 2020, when Rahul Gandhi faced some criticism over his frequent trips abroad, the party had said he was on a personal visit to Italy to meet “an ailing relative”.
Meanwhile, condolences poured in from across the political spectrum. Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to Twitter to offer his condolences and wrote, “Condolences to Sonia Gandhi Ji on the passing away of her mother, Mrs. Paola Maino. May her soul rest in peace. In this hour of grief, my thoughts are with the entire family.”
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and former J&K chief minister Omar Abdullah also tweeted to express their condolences.
“I join my father & other family members in conveying our heartfelt condolences to Mrs Sonia Gandhi ji, to Rahul, Priyanka and the entire family on the sad demise of Mrs Gandhi’s mother. May the soul of Mrs Maino rest in eternal peace,” Abdullah wrote.
Madhya Pradesh Congress president Kamal Nath also offered his condolences. “I am deeply shocked and saddened to hear about the passing away of the mother of Smt. Sonia Gandhi ji.
