Dehradun: Professor (Dr.) Tarannum Shakeel, HOD of the Eye Deptt. of Shri Mahant Indiresh Hospital has successfully operated cataract of a 160 kgs. diabetic patient. The operation was successful in which cataract of both the eyes of the patient was operated simultaneously. After the operation, the lady is recovering fast and has been discharged from the hospital. Mrs. Balwant Kaur, a 51 years old resident of Vasant Vihar area of Dehradun was complaining of decreasing eye sight in both the eyes. The patient being extremely overweight (160 kgs.) and diabetic, there were significant hurdles in cataract operation of both the eyes.
For the last five months, she had developed serious deficiency in vision to see from both the eyes was deteriorating. Her family took her to a number of hospitals. The doctors over there diagnosed that she had developed advanced cataract in both the eyes and an emergency operation was required immediately. But doctors of all these hospitals keeping in consideration, the excessive weight of the patient and high sugar level (diabetes) found that an operation can be life threatening to her. Due to this danger, all of them refused to conduct the operation.
Finally, the family members of Balwant Kaur took her to Shri Mahant Indiresh Hospital for treatment. On detailed examination, HOD Eye Deptt. of the hospital, Prof. (Dr.) Tarannum Shakeel decided that immediate operation of both the eyes was unavoidable. If it was delayed, the patient would have turned completely blind and after that any operation would be of no use. Thus, the operation of both the eyes of the patient was done by Dr. Tarannum Shakeel amid all precautions which was successful. The patient started seeing the very next day and was discharged from the hospital.

The patient being extremely over-weight and diabetic, the operation was very risky.
